ABC Black History Month 2021
The Alaska Black Caucus is pleased to announce a full calendar of celebrations and events in February, open to all in honor of Black History Month. Programs include short history lessons over coffee, story hours for kids, and stimulating and informative civic and community conversations. All events will be hosted on Zoom, out of concern for Covid-19.
Black Coffee with Cal will bring slices of Black history to go with your morning coffee, weekdays from 7:00 to 7:20 A.M., Feb. 1-25. Host Cal Williams has been a civil rights activist in Alaska since 1965. Stories 4 Kids will highlight tales read aloud by kids and parents from 10 to 11 A.M. every Saturday in February. Stories will celebrate outstanding children’s books by Black authors. All ages are welcome during this fun hour hosted by the ABC Education Committee. Four special programs will be presented in February as part of The Alaska Black Caucus’ ongoing Community Conversations series. All Conversations are hosted on Zoom, Sundays from 7-8 PM. February Conversations blast off on Feb. 7, with an inspirational, music-filled Kickoff Celebration of Black History Month. The Feb. 14 Conversation will highlight Blacks in the Military. The Feb. 21 topic will be Race, Health and Healthy Communities, featuring Ibram X. Kendi’s book Stamped From the Beginning. Kendi’s book on the history of racist ideas in America won the 2016 National Book Award for nonfiction, and is the selected work for Anchorage Reads 2021, a program of monthly discussions from February to June, supported by the Anchorage Library and the Alaska Center for the Book. For more on Anchorage Reads 2021, visit anchoragelibrary.org. The final February Community Conversation will be an Anchorage School Board Candidate Forum, on Feb. 28. Listen and ask questions of candidates who will be on the ballot during the April 6, 2021, Municipal election. All ABC Black History Month events will be hosted on Zoom.
