AK Battle of the Books Young Latina among State Champions by patty whited
Catalina Whited and her teammates, Claire Jong and Rayana Carpenter won both the District and State Battle of the Books competition. On January 27th, their team participated on the District Battle and from the 36 questions they were asked, only missed two. Their score put them in first place against 52 other schools.
After winning the District Battle, their team knew they will do their best to represent the Anchorage School District and Northern Lights ABC School in the State Battle. Sure enough, these young remarkable ladies made time to study for the competition, complete daily homework and attend their extracurricular activities successfully.
On February 28th, the State Battle started at 9:00am and ended at 3:10pm. The team battled against 32 other schools from around Alaska and won first place. It was a long day, but they felt really proud of their accomplishment. Catalina, Claire and Rayana are sixth grade students from Northern Lights ABC. This team dedicated many hours of studying during recess, after school and even on their weekends for about 4 months. We are very proud of these young ladies and their accomplishment. Congratulations!
The Battle of the Books is a statewide Alaskan reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic excellence.
