STATE PRIMARY ELECTION
Alaskans will vote in the state primary election August 18, narrowing the fields of candidates down to one Democrat/Independent and one Republican for each position. The general election is November 3. Voters will choose one candidate to serve Alaska in the U.S. House of Representatives. The incumbent is Representative Don Young, a Republican who is running again in this election. Three other Republicans, two Democrats and one Independent are also vying for the position in the primary. Voters will also choose one candidate to serve Alaska in the U.S. Senate. There are two Alaska Senators in the U.S. Congress, but the seat of only one — Daniel Sullivan — is up for reelection. Sullivan is running for reelection for the seat he currently occupies. One Democrat and three Independents are also running for the position in the primary. There are two separate ballots available to voters on primary election day. One is for the Republican ticket, available to registered Republicans, Independent voters and undeclared voters. There is also a ballot for Democratic and Independent candidates, which is opened to any registered voter. We asked each candidate to answer a few questions about the economy, immigration, health and education. We’ve included the answers of those who responded below. |
