Tourism to be heavily hit by Coronavirus

The Carnival Cruise line cancels trips to Alaska for its last Alaska-bound ship, the Carnival Spirit. In a written statement, the cruise line mentioned it will resume their Cruises in North America on August 1, however, trips for the Carnival Spirit will remain cancelled. This decision is a heavy blow to an already weakened tourist season. This year, Alaska expected 1.44 million tourists via cruise ships, of which 800,000 potential visitors had already been lost due to pandemic. 86% of tourists arrive in the summer, directly affecting 18,265 employees that the Alaska Department of Labor determined the summer tourism industry would have needed. The Carnival Spirit can transport 2,124 passengers, and, according to its schedule, was expected to make 11 trips to Alaska between July 7 and September 23. |
