Cafecito Bonito, a Beloved Community Hub, Says Goodbye
by SDMN
After hundreds of events and a strong effort to build community, Estrella Rodriguez, the owner of the establishment, announced they were closing their doors in a press release.
In an announcement that has left many in the Anchorage community surprised, Estrella Rodriguez, the owner of Cafecito Bonito, revealed that the beloved café will be closing its doors after three impactful years. A hub for art, activism, and camaraderie, Cafecito Bonito was more than just a place to grab coffee—it was a vibrant cultural cornerstone of the Latino community of our city.
“It was a wild roller coaster ride—complete with loop-de-loops of long hours, learning curves sharper than any espresso shot, and sleepless nights,” Rodriguez shared in her closing statement highlighting the challenges of running a business at just 22 years old. Since its opening, Cafecito Bonito has been a home for creativity and community, hosting over 300 events that highlighted local talent, including artists, musicians, drag queens, and activists. “Cafecito Bonito was more than just a café—it was a vibrant cultural hub,” Rodriguez reflected in her statement.
The café’s closure comes because of a decision by the landlord to pursue other plans for the location. As a result, Cafecito Bonito will not be available for sale or relocation. To ease the financial burden of this transition, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to cover remaining costs and expenses.
Rodriguez expressed immense gratitude for the community that embraced her vision, stating, “Seeing Cafecito bloom into what it became was nothing short of magical.” She fondly recalled how the café became a space for celebrating life’s milestones, from baby showers to weddings, it provided a platform for advocacy and self-expression, particularly for the queer community in Anchorage.”
“The recognition we’ve received from non-profits, community partners, state representatives, and, most importantly, our friends and patrons, is a testament to the impact we’ve made. We are deeply grateful for the support and love that have fueled us throughout these years. Although this chapter is closing, the memories and connections we’ve created will continue to inspire and resonate within the community. Cafecito Bonito will always be remembered as a place where art, activism, and community flourished together.” Estrella stated. “Anchorage, you’re amazing—keep building those safe spaces, keep advocating for each other,” she urged, inviting everyone to one final event at Cafecito Bonito before it shuts down, details are not announced yet.
