Happy Holidays!

During the holiday season, we remember the power of community, hope,
and family in Alaska’s Latino community.

The year comes to an end, and many of us feel the familiar pull of home. The holiday season arrives as a pause, a moment that invites us to breathe, to gather, and to remember what keeps us going. For Latinos across this vast state, that feeling is more than nostalgia. It is a connection. It is our heritage. It is a reminder that, even far from where many of our family’s stories began, we continue building something together.

And in a year marked by shifting policies, national debates, and questions about the future of our communities, those gatherings take on added meaning. Around our tables, families speak about opportunity, fairness, and the hopes they carry for their children. Neighbors check in on one another because civic life begins at home, long before any election or headline. These small acts reflect a truth that often goes unstated: Latino communities in Alaska contribute to the state’s resilience not only culturally and economically, but democratically. Our presence strengthens the state, and our voices remain essential as the country prepares for the year ahead.

As we look toward 2026, these moments fill our hearts with hope, but not a naive one that believes that everything simply will work out, but rather the conviction that we will make it happen. Hope is not a wish; it is practice. It shows up in the small ways we care for each other, in the pride we take in our work, and in the commitment to keep showing up for our communities. Every year brings its own challenges, and yet our presence here, our insistence on celebrating, on gathering, on dreaming, tells its own story: we belong. And we’re not going anywhere.

This season is also a chance to reconnect and reimagine the ways we connect with our community. That’s why we’re launching a new newsletter, one that brings you reporting, voices, and perspectives: all the things you love about SDMN straight to your inbox. We want to keep you informed, connected, and part of the dialogue. Your stories and your participation make this work matter.

So, as lights go up across the state and families prepare to welcome the new year, we offer our warmest wishes. May the days ahead bring peace, renewal, and moments that remind you of your own strength. May your homes stay full, your spirits stay steady, and your hope remains strong.

From our team to your family: Felices Fiestas! Let’s begin the next chapter together!
