This extended window is available for individuals who experience significant life changes that necessitate adjusting or obtaining new health coverage outside the usual enrollment timeframe.
The Special Enrollment Periods is designed for those undergoing major life events such as changes in employment, household composition—including marriage, childbirth, adoption, divorce, or legal separation—and other significant adjustments like moving to a new residence, changes in tribal membership, citizenship status, or transitioning out of incarceration. The United Way Healthcare Navigator Program is dedicated to helping people navigate this process, ensuring that essential health insurance remains accessible even after the standard deadline has passed. United Way Healthcare Navigators are specially trained and certified to identify these qualifying events and assist individuals through the enrollment process. They help gather and submit necessary documentation to verify eligibility, simplifying what can often be a complex procedure. In addition to helping with HealthCare.gov enrollments, United Way Healthcare Navigators also support applications for Medicaid and Denali KidCare. Unlike the Special Enrollment Period, applications for Medicaid and Denali KidCare can be submitted at any time of the year, with immediate enrollment available for those who qualify. It is crucial for applicants to keep their contact information current with the Alaska Department of Public Assistance and respond promptly to any communications regarding their Medicaid status, as the state has resumed the renewal process to confirm ongoing eligibility. For those who do not qualify for Medicaid, Healthcare Navigators offer guidance in exploring alternative coverage options available through HealthCare.gov. These Navigators provide free, unbiased, and accurate information, ensuring that everyone can make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage. “Health insurance can be complicated and confusing,” said Jane Straight, Director of Health, Income Impact at United Way of Anchorage. “Especially if it’s your first experience with insurance or with a new plan.
