On April 27, La Michoacana The Last Frontier celebrated its first year of operations, with new ice cream flavors and a menu of more than 20 eats. “We started with a small culinary offering and have grown through hard work and our customers’ suggestions,” said José de Jesús Villa Rangel, owner of La Michoacana.

Customers delight in chocolate Abuelita ice cream or blackberry cheesecake, among others. Corn on a stick, strawberries and cream, mangonada, tosticeviche, and fruit salad in a cup are just some of the popular snacks.

“The idea to open the ice cream shop came from my wife, Daniela Villa, whose dream was to bring a little piece of Mexico to Alaska,” said Villa Rangel.

“It took us four years to develop this project, save money, educate ourselves, and create the menu. Our advantage is offering fresh food, and for that, we appreciate our customers’  patience when placing their orders,” said Daniela.

José has worked in the kitchens of various Anchorage restaurants. His strength lies in making a delicious Mexican-style ceviche, although he clarifies that La Michoacana’s recipes are unique. Daniela, for her part, is a nursing assistant and a party decoration enthusiast. She has taken several artisanal ice cream courses, and her innovation has been limitless in creating flavors for ice creams and popsicles.

The ice cream shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 9:00 p.m.
It is located on E Tudor Rd. Unit #1.

This young entrepreneurial couple plans to open a branch in Wasilla in the near future.
