“Abya Yala: Indigenous Latinx Roots in Alaska” exhibit at the Anchorage Museum
“Nuestra Huella (Our Footprint)” is a series of events at the Anchorage Museum organized by ENLACES to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Alaska. As part of Nuestra Huella, the exhibition “Abya Yala: Indigenous Latinx Roots in Alaska” will showcase a collection of pre-Hispanic pieces and artwork by Alaskan Latinx artists. The exhibition, curated by Itzel Zagal, intends to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Latino community in Alaska and to open the opportunity for new generations of Latinx to reclaim and reconnect with their Indigenous roots as an act of cultural resistance.
The exhibition is accompanied by three workshops open to the community. 1. Mexicah or Aztec Dance Workshop: - Saturdays 9:30 am -10:30 am. - Location: Seed Lab (in front of the Anchorage Museum) - 111 W 6th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501. There is a small free parking lot next to the Seed Lab. - Starts on August 24 and ends with participation in the event at the Museum on Friday, October 4, 2024. - This workshop is suitable for all ages, from children to seniors. Participants should attend in comfortable clothing. The workshop will share basic aspects of the Mexican or Aztec worldview and dances. 2. Grandmothers Workshop - Friday, November 1, 2024 – 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. - Location: Seed Lab (in front of the Anchorage Museum) - 111 W 6th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501. There is a small free parking lot next to the Seed Lab. - This workshop is open to the community interested in writing a memory, message, or recollection about a grandmother and doing an exercise to honor her memory on the eve of the Community Day of the Dead. 3. Ancestral Seeds Workshop - Saturday, January 18, 2025 – 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. - Location: Seed Lab (in front of the Anchorage Museum) - 111 W 6th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501. There is a small free parking lot next to the Seed Lab. - In this workshop, the teachings of MILPA will be shared, some seeds of Indigenous origin from Latin America will be discussed, and how some of them can be grown in Alaska. A basic explanation will be given of how to germinate seeds in Anchorage, Alaska.
