Miguel Ángel Ramírez: “I Want to Be the Voice of the Entire Community”

A retired Army veteran, Miguel A. Ramirez has lived in Fairbanks for 12 years and is now seeking a seat on the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly. “I want to be the voice of the entire community,” he said.
Born in New York, he describes himself as “a blend of various cultures.” His father, Miguel, is of Guatemalan descent, and his mother, Leticia, is from Puerto Rico. Raised with Christian values, Miguel is a conservative. He is married to Maria Ramirez and has a daughter, Aries, from his first marriage. Ramirez works as a housing manager at Fort Wainwright.
“I fulfilled my duty to my country; I served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now I must fulfill my duty to my community. I am not a politician. I believe people need less government and more power and opportunities to start small businesses, so they aren’t forced to move to another state,” he noted.
Miguel believes in a healthy fiscal environment that stimulates economic growth, affordable housing, and keeping property taxes low. “The borough has squandered tax money on frivolous things while failing to maintain existing infrastructure. This is an unacceptable practice that ends with me.”
Regarding Hispanic participation in local elections, Ramirez points out that “the entire community needs to understand that for change to happen, people have to get out and vote. Years ago, someone here won by a margin of a single vote. I narrowly lost the 2024 election; this time, with God’s blessing, I am seeking to win so I can serve everyone. If I succeed, I will be the first assembly member of Hispanic descent.”
Early local voting runs from September 21 to October 2, and the official election is on October 6. “This year is important because we need to support maintaining the tax cap. We are also asking for support to move local elections from October to November—coinciding with the national elections—to boost voter turnout and cut costs.”
Ramirez believes in debate. “I don’t want division; I want a community that can engage in civil discourse. You have to listen in order to hear, not just to respond. I am here to make a difference.”
