North Slope Data Center Proposal Tests Alaska’s Energy Future

A proposal for one of the nation’s largest artificial intelligence data centers is placing Alaska’s North Slope at the center of a rapidly expanding technological and geopolitical race.
According to reporting by Alaska Public Media and Alaska Beacon, Alaska-rooted startup Stak Energy wants to build a $500 million data center complex roughly 25 miles south of existing North Slope infrastructure near the Dalton Highway. State officials have already issued preliminary approval for a long-term land lease while a public comment period continues through mid-June. The proposed facility would span more than a square mile and support artificial intelligence, cloud computing and high-performance analytical systems. Documents cited by Alaska Beacon indicate the project could eventually generate up to three gigawatts of electricity for its own operations, placing it among the largest data center developments currently planned in the United States.
Supporters of the project argue Alaska offers advantages that many Lower 48 developments lack. The North Slope’s cold climate could dramatically reduce cooling demands, with company materials claiming water consumption could drop by more than 90% compared with conventional facilities. The site would also sit near vast reserves of stranded natural gas, allowing the center to produce electricity independently instead of relying on Alaska’s urban electrical grids. That distinction matters as concerns over data centers intensify nationwide. Reporting by Anchorage Daily News describes growing anxiety around the energy demands of AI infrastructure, especially in regions where utilities are already struggling to meet demand. Utilities in Anchorage and Fairbanks told ADN they currently lack sufficient natural gas supplies to support large-scale facilities connected to their systems.
Military planners are also pursuing similar infrastructure. The Department of the Air Force recently opened opportunities for developers to build AI-focused data centers on military installations including Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Eielson Air Force Base and Clear Space Force Station. The effort follows a federal push to expand domestic AI capacity and strengthen technological infrastructure tied to national security. Yet the North Slope proposal faces substantial hurdles. Industry-wide shortages for natural gas turbines have created manufacturing backlogs stretching as long as seven years, according to Alaska Beacon. Questions also remain about broadband latency, financing, gas supply agreements and the practical challenges of building industrial infrastructure at Arctic scale. The project would require massive quantities of gravel to elevate facilities above tundra conditions, along with additional federal permitting tied to wetlands and water protections. Stak Energy has also acknowledged that its operations would initially depend on fossil fuels while future carbon-capture options remain uncertain. For Alaska policymakers, the proposal reflects a broader question increasingly shaping the state’s economic future: whether the Arctic can become a strategic hub for the next generation of computing infrastructure.
