Ten Years, One Community

A decade of shared purpose. Together, we inform, connect, and build hope, strengthening Alaska’s Latino community for years to come.

This May marks ten years since our first edition reached readers across Alaska. Its initial publication, which included an explanation of the true meaning of Cinco de Mayo began as a commitment to inform, but a decade later, it has grown into something deeper, shaped by the people who have trusted us with their stories, their voices, and their time. Over the years, we have built something that transcends a standard newspaper. We have built a space where a community can see itself, recognize its strength, and feel connected to something larger.

From the beginning, our purpose has been clear. We set out to be a reliable source of Spanish-language news for Alaska’s Latino community, a bridge between cultures, and a place where stories that often go overlooked could take their rightful place in the public conversation. From world-changing events like a pandemic to stories of human interests of local activists, all have found a home in these pages. That purpose has guided every edition, every interview, every late night spent making sure a story is told with care and precision.

In addition, and what makes it special, is that this work has always been collaborative. It lives in the trust between a reader and a reporter, in the courage of those who choose to speak, in the dedication of a team that believes deeply in the role of journalism. It also lives in the broader community formed by activists, educators, and leaders who continue to show what it means to move forward with conviction. Their efforts remind us that progress is built together, step by step, with persistence and clarity of purpose, even during some of our community’s most complex times.

Journalism, especially for the Latino community in Alaska, carries a responsibility that goes beyond information. It connects neighbors, highlights contributions, and creates pathways for participation and civic life. When people engage with their communities, by learning about their rights, organizing, voting, or simply staying informed, they strengthen the fabric that holds us all together. That belief has shaped our coverage and the wide array of successful information campaigns and will continue to shape it in the years ahead.

However, reaching this milestone brings a sense of gratitude that is difficult to fully express. Every reader, every supporter, every person who has shared our work has helped make this project what it is today. Your presence has given it meaning. Your trust has given it purpose. And now, a decade in and while we face some of the most challenging times for the Latino community, our commitment stands firm. We will continue to inform with rigor, to educate with clarity, to connect with intention, and to build alongside the community we serve. The path forward is one we walk together, with resilience and a shared belief that informed communities carry the power to shape their future.

Sol de Medianoche is here, rooted in that belief, and the belief that our community can achieve amazing things. And thanks to you, it will continue to grow for many years.
