What You Need to Know
Alaska’s New Open Primary System

BY THE ALASKA CENTER

In 2020, Alaskans voted YES to implement a new voting system - open primaries and ranked-choice voting - and voters used the new system for the first time in 2022. The next open primary election is on August 20, and the general election day is November 5. Here’s a look at the new system, including key election dates you need to keep in mind.

What is the Open Primary System?
Instead of separate primaries for each party, there will be one Open Primary where voters of any affiliation—Democratic, Republican, Independent, or no party—can vote for any candidate. The four candidates who receive the most votes in the Primary will advance to the general election. In the general election, apart from the presidential race, voters will choose among these top four candidates using Ranked-Choice voting. With all candidates competing in a single primary, candidates must appeal across party lines, resulting in less extreme partisanship, potentially leading to more moderate and broadly liked candidates.

Important dates and things to know

You can help shape the future of Alaskan politics in a way that reflects your values and the values of your community by voting in both the Primary (August 20) and the General Elections (November 5) this year. Ensure you’re registered to vote, and your voter information is up to date! You can check your status and register online through the Alaska Division of Elections website. Don’t wait in line on election day; apply to vote by mail for the Primary (deadline to apply 8/10) or the General Election (deadline to apply 10/26). Any registered voter can apply to vote by mail - it’s an easy, safe, and secure way to cast your ballot. You can even apply online. Research all candidates, not just those from your preferred political party. With the new system, it’s important to understand the values of all the candidates on the ballot.

Alaska’s transition to an open primary system represents a significant shift towards more inclusive and representative elections. By voting in both the primary and general elections, you can help shape the future of our state in a way that reflects your vision and values. Get out and vote!
