Residents of Alaska, Corporations and Other Groups Donate $1.31. Million
to Help Fight Coronavirus
April 23, 2020
Alaskans and corporations have donated about $1.3 million to the “AK Can Do” fund to help individuals and non-profits recuperate from the economic impact of the COVID-19 virus.
The AK Can Do fund is a partnership between United Way of Anchorage and The Alaska Community Foundation.
At least $350,000 are from individual donors, $125,000 from Wells Fargo Bank, $100,000 from Sealaska Corporation, and $50,000 from Alaska's Premera Blue Blue Blue Shield, among others. The Rasmuson Foundation has donated $360,000 to the fund.
On Thursday, April 23, 2020, ConocoPhillips Alaska reported a guaranteed donation of $100,000, with an additional $100,000 pledged as a "challenge" grant, meaning it will be donated if matched by other donations, according to a statement by the Rasmuson Foundation. If the challenge grant is matched, that would raise the total to nearly $1.5 million.
The money goes to individuals and non-profit organizations, and 80% has already been distributed. Nearly 250 Alaskan families with a member who has lost a job due to the closure of their business employer have received assistance so they can maintain their homes.
More than $215,000 went to 25 nonprofits, supporting childcare centers and shelters for victims of domestic violence. According to the AK Can Do website, money is still being raised and more will be distributed in two weeks. Nonprofits can complete a four-question request for funding.
There is no limit to the funds that a nonprofit can apply for in the application process. However, 308 nonprofits applied already for a combined total of $4.7million.
