ALASKA WOMEN ASCEND

we need women to lead

by NORA MORSE

Picture
Alaska Women Ascend is a local organization encouraging and training women to run for office, manage a campaign, work as a campaign treasurer, and builds more engaged and impactful female activists.  We started after President Trump was elected as a way for women who were feeling overwhelmed, scared, and motivated to have the chance to channel their desire to work on campaigns. Our goal is to shed light on the campaign process, teach women how to get involved, and elect women to public office across Alaska.

Currently in Alaska, women make up less than 39% of the State Legislature. While it is not enough, it is the most we have ever seen. Women make up more than 50% of the electorate and we know that when women vote, women win. But getting involved in the electoral process, a traditionally male dominated field, can be hard, intimidating, and overwhelming for women – especially to those looking to run for office.

But we need women. We need women to lead. We need to hear their voices. Hear their perspective. We need our representatives to look like those they represent.

Our training is a monthly Saturday training from September to April. The topics will include campaign 101’s, how to manage a campaign, public speaking training, volunteering, and more. Women with decades of experience come together to share their knowledge with us.

Alaska Women Ascend is starting the third session of training this September – in time for women to engage in the 2020 Presidential election. Applications are due August 10th and can be found at www.akwomenascend.org/training.

If you have ever wanted to learn about the political process, work on a campaign, or run for office, please consider joining Alaska Women Ascend.
