Keeping Anchorage School District Families Informed During COVID-19

The Anchorage School District is actively planning for the start of the 2020-21 school year. ASD is dedicated to keeping our students and families informed about what to expect in the coming school year, with student safety and wellbeing being our priority.

To align with the State’s Alaska Smart Start 2020 framework, ASD will develop plans to conduct school for each risk level: Low, Medium, and High. For Low Risk, classes would be conducted in ASD buildings and would incorporate mitigating factors to ensure the safety of students and staff. Medium Risk would likely incorporate a cohort model, modified schedule or blend of in-class and online learning. High Risk would most likely be classes conducted entirely online with no student/staff contact.

District Administration will present the proposed plans to the School Board for approval in the latter part of July. The District will update families about school start information directly through email and text, as well as through the 2020 Start website: www.asdk12.org/2020start. To translate the information on any ASD webpage, scroll to the bottom right of the page and select your preferred language from the drop-down list.

Families are encouraged to update their contact information with the District, to ensure they receive important updates. This can be done through their Q ParentConnection account, or by contacting the ASD ELL Family Welcome Center. All returning families need to complete online registration for their students for the upcoming school year, by following the steps outlined on the website: https://www.asdk12.org/registration.

Visit the Family Resources page for help with technology, academics, and more: www.asdk12.org/familyresources.
Families can also call 907-742-4357 (742-HELP), with interpreters available.

Anchorage School District’s ELL Family Welcome Center

The Anchorage School District’s English Language Learner (ELL) Family Welcome Center will reopen on July 28 to help families for the new school year. The ELL Family Welcome Center, located at the ASD Education Center at 5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd., offers services and resources for families who speak languages other than English. Bilingual staff will be available to help with secondary students’ enrollment and English testing, information about school district programs, and connecting families with community resources.

Families new to Anchorage who have students to enroll, or returning families who have school-related questions, can call the ELL Family Welcome Center at 907-742-4455 starting July 28 to get help or make an appointment.

Note: ASD enrolls students without inquiring about their immigration status and without discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin. Students have a legal right to access public education regardless of their immigration status or their parents’ status.
