Ballot Measure 1
PFD Automatic Voter Registration

BY: THE Alaska Center

Alaska is an incredibly diverse state, and Anchorage is one of the most diverse cities in the nation. As our population grows and changes, we must ensure that all of our voices are being heard on the issues that impact our health, our communities, and our future.
Latinos, for example, make up roughly 5% of our overall Alaskan population, and this community is growing. However, these numbers are not adequately represented in the voting booths. Younger people, rural residents, non-English speakers, and other Alaskans are also not well represented in our electorate. Our current voter registration system is not efficient, and has created some barriers for many Alaskans to engage.

This November, voters will have an opportunity to fix our voter registration problem, and bring more voices into the electorate, by voting YES on Ballot Measure 1—The PFD Automatic Voter Registration Initiative. The Alaska Center, along with groups such as the Alaska Civil Liberties Union, the Alaska Federation of Natives, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and many others have been promoting a common sense solution that will link voter registration to applications for the Permanent Fund Dividend.

Ballot Measure 1 will automatically register up to 70,000 new voters and ensure that thousands more are registered at their correct voting locations.

We need to make sure our friends and families turn out to vote November 8th and support Ballot Measure 1 to ensure that all eligible Alaskans can participate in the decisions that impact our communities.
