Mexican Consulate on Wheels
Passports, consular registration, voter ID, birth certificates, and registration for citizenship

BY SOL DE MEDIANOCHE

On May 13 and 14, the Mexican Consulate on Wheels will visit Anchorage. Their office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 750 West Dimond Boulevard unit 100. To apply for documents, an appointment will be required. The following documents will be issued:

Passport. This document serves as proof of nationality, as official identification in Mexico and other countries, and as a travel document. To request it, you must present your birth certificate and a photo ID, which can be a Mexican voter ID, consular registration, state of Alaska ID or driver’s license.

Consular registration. This serves as identification and as proof of nationality. With this document the Mexican government keeps a record of every Mexican in the jurisdiction of a consulate. This serves, for example, to help locate Mexicans after natural disasters or other crises. To request it, you should present your birth certificate, photo ID, and a bill or similar piece of mail addressed to you, or other proof of domicile (the place where you live).

Voting ID. It serves as an official identification in Mexico and will be needed to vote in the Mexican presidential election of 2018. To request it, you will need the same documentation as is required for the consular registration.

Birth certificate certified copies. These documents may be issued only to Mexicans born in Mexico. To obtain them it will be necessary to present photo ID and to fill out an application.

Registration of Mexican citizenship. Minors born in the United States of at least one Mexican parent can receive Mexican citizenship without having to give up their American citizenship. It is advisable that minors have double citizenship so if the family must move out of the US, minors can enter Mexico as Mexican citizens. As citizens the time they can stay in Mexico will not limited. To register minors for Mexican citizenship, one must present the child’s birth certificate, birth certificates of the Mexican parent (s), parents’ marriage certificate, and parents’ photo ID. Applicants must also bring two witnesses. Once this registration is made, the Consulate suggests to request a Mexican passport for the minors.

All documentation must be presented as originals and must not have erasures or amendments. The names of the interested persons must match in all of the submitted documents
