EVERYONE´S WELCOME TO SCHOOL

Anchorage School District Family Welcome Center
elps New & Returning Families

BY Katie Bisson

Do you know families who are looking for help getting their children ready to start school in August? The Anchorage School District’s Academic English Learner (AEL) Family Welcome Center will be reopening on July 29th to help families for the new school year.

The Family Welcome Center, located at the ASD Education Center at 5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd., offers services and resources for families who speak languages other than English. Bilingual staff will be available to help with enrollment, initial English testing, information about school district programs, and connect families with community resources.

All new-to-district students enrolling in grades 6-12 who speak a language other than English must schedule an appointment at the Family Welcome Center before starting school. During the appointment, students will take an English proficiency exam to determine if they are eligible to receive English language services, and staff will help families complete the district’s enrollment forms, review the required documents, and share information about starting school.

Families will need to bring the following documents with them to enroll: proof of residency (such as a utility bill, or a contract of purchase, or lease agreement), official immunization records, birth certificate (or alternate document verifying legal name and date of birth), and previous school records.

Families new to Anchorage who have students to enroll, or returning families who have school-related questions, should call at 742-4455 starting July 29th to make an appointment.
Note: ASD enrolls students without inquiring about their immigration status and without discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin. Students have a legal right to access public education regardless of their immigration status or their parents’ status.
