Guatemala delays arrival of deported flights after border closure by coronavirus
May 18, 2020.
A flight from the United States carrying deported migrants should have arrived in Guatemala on Friday, but was postponed until Monday after their president, Alejandro Giammattei, announced the total closure of Guatemala’s borders to stop the spread of COVID-19.
In addition, free transit through national territory will also be limited to people entering it because of deportation, as three people who entered the country last Wednesday on a U.S. return flight tested positive for Coronavirus. Guatemala’s Chancellery reported that Guatemala's Minister of Health will contact the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to discuss review protocols for deportees and to define what to do about this matter.
