We cannot avoid political conversations, but there are ways to make them
​less contentious and divisive. In this article, we tell you how.​

Navigating the waters of political discourse can be treacherous and sometimes futile. Yet, as the upcoming presidential election approaches and the rest of this year becomes heavily political, the relevance of fostering meaningful conversations about politics has become increasingly apparent. With emotions running high and opinions diverging, preparing ourselves with the tools necessary to engage in meaningful discussions that foster understanding rather than deepen divides is essential. In this article, as part of our Tu Voz Importa platform, we bring tips to improve how to talk about politics in your everyday life.

1. Examine your motives: Before diving headfirst into a politically charged conversation, take a moment of introspection to examine your motives. Are you seeking to change the other person’s mind, or do you genuinely aim to understand their perspective and build bridges? Being clear about our intentions helps to lay the groundwork for constructive dialogue and sets the tone for a good conversation.

2. Recognize others’ humanity: Break the ice before delving into contentious topics, reaffirming your personal connection. At all times, refrain from personal attacks. This fosters empathy and creates a conducive environment for open and meaningful dialogue.

3. Listening is key: Instead of just waiting for your turn to speak, engage in actually understanding the other person’s perspectives. Showing genuine interest in their viewpoint paves the way for mutual respect and learning. This doesn’t need to be static; ask clarifying questions to transcend surface-level conversations.

4. Identify shared values: Seek common ground by identifying shared values rather than fixating on divisive policy positions. Opportunities for consensus amid disagreement will likely emerge while focusing on encompassing principles such as inclusivity or the pursuit of the common good.

5. Redirect when needed: It’s crucial to discern when redirection is necessary. If discussions devolve into a stalemate with irreconcilable differences in trusted sources or fundamental facts, gracefully accepting the impasse may be the most pragmatic course of action.

This means being generous in providing the benefit of the doubt and ensuring that we assume that another person is arguing from the best possible motives. When there’s an assumption that the other person has a nefarious purpose, it leads to even harsher disagreement and risks the productivity of the conversation.

Additionally, while numbers are essential pieces of evidence, focusing on individual stories and experiences can humanize complex issues in political conversations, fostering empathy and facilitating constructive dialogue. By sharing personal anecdotes and perspectives, individuals can connect on a human level, transcending political differences.
