A new Paletería is opening in Anchorage and hopes to bring a unique dessert experience infused with Mexican flavors.
Anchorage has a new ice cream shopwhere you can enjoy sweet treats infused with the richness of Mexican culture. La Michoacana The Last Frontier is a new cultural experience that brings a taste of home for many in the Hispanic community and introduces the wonders of a Paletería (Mexican Ice Cream Shop) to new audiences in Anchorage. Sol de Medianoche News talked with Daniela Villa, one of the proud owners, to learn more about their journey and vision for this unique establishment.
Daniela Villa, along with her husband Jesús Villa, who have lived 29 and 10 years in Anchorage respectively, trace back their roots to Acuitzio del Canje, a small town in Michoacán, Mexico. They have been developing the idea of the paletería for many years. Daniela shared: “We have been studying, practicing, and saving for a few years to bring a piece of our Michoacán to the last frontier. We wanted a space where many of our Hispanic community could feel at home.” Their dedication to authenticity and community shines through in every aspect of their business.
This can be seen especially in their menu, which is a testament to the diversity of Mexican flavors. From traditional ice cream and paletas to refreshing aguas frescas (lemonade like drinks made with fresh fruit) and snacks, there’s something for everyone. Daniela further added that the menu is constantly evolving: “Our aguas frescas change daily, and our ice cream and popsicles are also constantly changing.”
Moreover, they’re committed to infusing local Alaskan flavors into their offerings, with plans for unique creations like Fireweed and Blueberry ice cream in the summer and fall seasons. In addition, they are working hard with a series of distributors from around the country to get tropical fruits to further increase the offerings.
Paleterías La Michoacana are a well-known series of establishments that share, all across Mexico, a similar aesthetic and branding but are not franchises. This is the case here in Alaska too. Daniela emphasized that they are a locally-owned, family-operated establishment—not a franchise. “We are proud to say everything is fresh and made in Alaska,” she remarked.
This commitment to quality and authenticity sets them apart in the bustling landscape of Anchorage eateries and creates an environment that Daniela hopes fosters discovery. “We hope they find it unique to have something different and not feel like they are in Mexico enjoying a paleta, nieve, or agua fresca.” La Michoacana The Last Frontier aims to be more than just a place to grab a sweet treat; it’s a portal to another world, a celebration of culture and community.
In conclusion, La Michoacana The Last Frontier isn’t just an ice cream shop—it’s a labor of love, a testament to the rich tapestry of flavors and traditions that make up Mexican cuisine. With Daniela and Jesús Villa at the helm, this charming establishment promises to be a beacon of warmth and hospitality in the heart of Alaska.
