Anchorage mayor promises safety for immigrants
“The police are here to help you, not the immigration ofFIcers” - ETHAN BERKOWITZ

BY SOL DE MEDIANOCHE

At a Latino community meeting on February 19, Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz gave a message in Spanish: “I understand that a new executive order will be signed in Washington. I will not put my signature on any document that accepts it. I am the son of immigrants and everyone who knows me knows what this means in my mind and in my heart.”

According to the National Association of Counties, “new Alaskans” contribute $1.9 billion to Alaska’s economic activity. Understanding the importance of immigrants and refugees to Anchorage, Berkowitz has welcomed them since the beginning of his administration. That is why at the meeting held at the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, he told the immigrants: “You are part of this community. Thanks to you we have a multicultural community and it is one of the reasons why Anchorage is special.”

Berkowitz acknowledges the vulnerability of immigrants in the current political climate: “I understand that there is a little fear about what happens with the federal government of the United States. I never thought I would live in a country such as this one. But we are here now. It is very important to be together because when we are together we are stronger.” And he promises: “The police do not want to see your documents, they want your security, they are here to help you, not the immigration officers.”
