Sol de Medianoche celebrates six years in the “land of opportunities”

Picture

In the spring of 2016, Sol de Medianoche was born with the same objective it maintains today. It is six years wanting to “create community” and strengthen it, informing Hispanics, fundamentally, but not exclusively (also other minorities in Alaska) that we live in a state that is a “land of opportunities” and in which we can make the difference between our “yesterday” past and our dreamed “tomorrow”.

Six years working hard and overcoming many difficulties to provide the Hispanic, African American, Asian American, and Alaska Native communities with the information that can be most useful to them in building a future and defending their rights. Six years in which we have demonstrated that, when a person wants to give a new direction to their life, they can do so without their ethnic origin or nationality representing an insurmountable obstacle. All that is needed is solidarity and a sense of brotherhood with our fellow human beings, helping newly arrived immigrants to integrate into Alaska’s emerging society.

We speak of “creating community” because we want to instill in our readers pride in our roots; pride in being Hispanic, African American, Asian American or Alaskan Native, without disparaging those who are different. For this, we must be aware of what our people (our ethnicity) represents in the present, past and, above all, in the future of America. All of America, and not just a part of it.

We are defenders of equal opportunities, equity, and Human Rights, which do not distinguish between races, genders, origins, political beliefs, or religions. We are and we want to continue being “a sun in the midst of darkness,” as we asserted in our first editorial, by way of presentation.

We took those first steps laboriously. First, we published every three months, coinciding with the seasons of the year: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In the following three years we tried to increase our presence and published every other month from 2017 to March of 2020. And from April 2020 our periodicity is monthly, and we also joined social networks (Facebook and Instagram), with a growing number of followers.

Surviving six years with limited resources is almost a miracle made possible by the team working for Sol de Medianoche, the only bilingual newspaper in Alaska.
It is also a miracle made possible by our readership and advertisers, because without advertising or any other source of resources (for example, in the form of grants or subsidies) it would have been almost impossible to continue. We are proud to say that this has been accomplished while maintaining our independence.

For this reason, we celebrate our sixth year of life with renewed strength to be able to offer our readers, you, a quality product with useful and interesting information.
And you? will you support us in continuing to provide useful bilingual information in Alaska? We encourage you to be guided by your ethical commitment, which is also your ethnic commitment.
