Unnatural Election: Artists Raise Their Voice
More than 250 art pieces from around the world

BY SOL DE MEDIANOCHE

Andrea Arroyo was at a party when she learned the result of the November 8 general election. Before the votes were counted, she had prepared an artwork entitled Stronger Together that would celebrate the first woman president in the United States, but the result was not what she expected. Feeling defeated, she went to her studio and altered the piece’s colors to give the impression of a photographic negative. Then she made three more works. But the four pieces were not enough to allay her sadness. So she organized the collective project Unnatural Election: Artists Respond to the US Presidential Election.

Arroyo says, “I opened a temporary site, sent the call to several artists, and immediately began to receive answers.” Soon, Unnatural Election had become a “healing space, but also a forum for artists from around the world.” Herself a visual artist and art curator, Arroyo says the site brings together “a community of artists at an international level.” The Unnatural Election site features pieces from all over the United States, and also from Turkey, Spain, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, Ecuador, France, Scotland, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Cuba, Latvia, the Netherlands, Australia, and Japan.

So far the project has more than 250 works. The pieces are currently exhibited at the New York University, and Arroyo plans to tour the exhibit across the United States. Arroyo stays busy: “Every day, pieces continue to arrive.” She has worked on other collective projects, such as her Tribute to the disappeared. This was made in response to violence in Mexico, but also gives voice to disappeared people around the world.

The pieces reproduced on pages 1 through 6 of this issue are part of the project Unnatural Election.
