ANCHORAGE WELCOMING WEEK 2019

Welcoming Week is both a celebration and an educational effort to raise awareness about the economic, cultural, and social benefits of a diverse community. It provides an opportunity to bring together immigrants, refugees, settlers and indigenous residents in celebration and conversation.

​There are a series of activities scheduled throughout Anchorage, including a naturalization ceremony hosted by the Municipality; a community celebration on the Museum lawn featuring food, art, culture and fun; and a Civics Engagement Fair at the Loussac Library featuring a Hate Crimes Forum with keynote speakers from the Matthew Shepard Foundation. 
Here is a sampling of our events:
Friday, September 13th. 
11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Refugee Assistance & Immigration Services (RAIS) is hosting a Ukrainian Pop-Up Lunch at the RAIS Welcome Center. Ticket information available on RAIS’s website. 

Saturday, September 14th. 
10:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Anchorage Welcoming Week Community Celebration Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. Performances on the Museum lawn. Explore the museum collection through docent tours in numerous languages.Free admission sponsored by Wells Fargo.

Saturday, September 14th. 
12:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Storytelling Saturday Theatre presents “How Raven Got His Crooked Nose”, a traditional Alaskan Dena’ina fable presented by the Anchorage Museum, Keys to Life and Bridge Builders. 
Free and open to the public. 

Saturday, September 14th. 
4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

“Hiroshima-Amchitka Legacies: What Future Can We Choose?” Museum Auditorium.
Free and open to the public.

Wednesday, September 18th. 
12:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Naturalization Ceremony. Anchorage Assembly Chambers at Loussac Library. Please join in celebrating and welcoming our newest citizens.  

Saturday, September 21st. 
1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Hate Crimes Forum in the Wilda Marston Theater at the Loussac Library. Our keynote speakers are Judy & Dennis Shepard, from the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
This event is free and open to the public.

Sunday, September 22nd. 
1:00 p.m.

Celebrate the close of another successful Anchorage Welcoming Week with a walk down the beautiful Chester Creek Trail corridor. We will meet at Eastchester Park (900 E. 20th Ave).
This is a great opportunity to meet neighbors, explore the trail, and get moving.
