Will People Die of Starvation or Coronavirus?

Millions of people in Latin America are starving because of COVID-19. About 215 million, the equivalent of 34.7% of the population, are living in poverty according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, a situation that was aggravated by the pandemic. Rising unemployment is an extra component of the problem, as this could lead to more people into poverty. A report of the above-mentioned economic commission confirms that poverty and inequality in all countries in the region will increase mainly due to coronavirus. Julio Berdegué, regional representative of the committee, mentioned that this pandemic comes at a time of low economic growth and high inequality, making it a perilous factor for the region. |
